On Jan. 12, Block (formerly payments company Square) founder and CEO Jack Dorsey proposed a legal defense fund for bitcoin developers as the community faces "multi-party lawsuits" and "threats" forcing some without legal backing. People "surrender".

In an email to the Bitcoin developers mailing list, Jack Dorsey posted the proposal, which disclosed the fund's board members including Jack Dorsey himself, Chaincode Labs co-founder Alex Morcos and academic Martin White.

The primary purpose of the fund is to defend developers by finding and retaining defense attorneys, strategizing litigation, and paying legal fees, while also assembling a team of volunteer and part-time attorneys, which the fund does not currently plan to raise External funding, but may be funded in the future under the direction of the Board of Directors.
