FBI warns public to beware of 'love scams' involving cryptocurrencies

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning that the number of romance scams in the San Francisco Bay Area is on the rise, with the latest trend involving cryptocurrencies, Cointelegraph reported on February 12.

A few days before Valentine's Day, the U.S. FBI's San Francisco office alerted the public to the rising number of romance scams, based on a complaint filed with its Cybercrime Complaint Center (IC3).

Such scams include creating fake accounts to persuade unsuspecting investors, both men and women, to transfer funds under the pretext of falling in love. According to information shared by the FBI: "Victims of the FBI's San Francisco division lost more than $64 million to romance scams, up from just over $35 million in 2020.
