U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco announced on Thursday local time that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is creating a “dedicated team dedicated to cryptocurrencies” called the Virtual Asset Crime Investigation Unit.
The unit will include crypto experts and have blockchain analytics that could eventually be used to trace and seize illicit funds.
Monaco said the Justice Department will launch an international virtual currency initiative that would allow “more joint international enforcement actions” to trace funds through blockchain and encourage responsible regulation of digital assets.
