Bipartisan U.S. lawmakers call on the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to strengthen cryptocurrency regulation

A group of heavyweight bipartisan U.S. lawmakers has called on Wall Street’s top derivatives watchdog to do more to regulate cryptocurrencies, in what could be good news for industry executives who want the agency to play a bigger role .

In a letter to the chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), top Democrats and Republicans on the Senate and House Agriculture Committees said the CFTC could play a “critical role” in regulating digital assets.

“Customers must be protected from fraud and encroachment, and these markets must be fair and transparent,” said lawmakers including Debbie Stabenow, the top Democrat on the Senate Agriculture Committee.
